EDITORIAL ETHICS POLICY

The publication of papers in peer-reviewed journals is an essential component for the development of a coherent and respected knowledge network. It is a direct reflection of the work quality of authors and institutions that support them. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the scientific method.

Therefore, agreeing on the standards of ethical behavior expected for all parties involved in the act of publication is essential, namely: authors, the journal editor, peer reviewers, associate editors and the association that sponsors or owns the journal.

General obligations and responsibilities of the Editors

As the highest authorities of the Journal, the editors of the Colombian Journal of Gastroenterology commit to comply with the following responsibilities: to strive to meet the needs of readers and authors; to constantly improve the quality of the journal; to ensure the quality of the contents published in the journal; to ensure freedom of expression; to maintain the academic integrity of the journal contents; to prevent commercial interests from influencing intellectual standards; to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when necessary.

Relations with readers

Readers must be informed about who has funded the research and about the role of the funding institution in the research.

Relations with authors

The Colombian Journal of Gastroenterology is committed to ensure the quality of the contents it publishes by explicitly stating its objectives and standards, as well as the objectives and standards of its different sections. Editors' decisions regarding the acceptance or rejection of a paper for publication are based solely on its relevance, methodological quality, originality, and expository clarity, as well as on the relevance of the study in relation to the editorial scope of the Journal. The Journal includes a description of the processes implemented in the peer review of all papers submitted to the Journal, and is committed to record and explain any significant deviation from these processes (if any). To this end, the Journal has made available a “Guidelines for authors” document in which authors are informed about all the requirements they are expected to meet for submitting a paper to the journal. These guidelines are updated regularly. Authors have the right to appeal editorial decisions. Editors shall not change their decision regarding the acceptance of submissions, unless irregularities or extraordinary situations are detected. Likewise, any editorial decision that has been already made and informed shall not be affected by any change in the membership of the editorial team, except in cases where serious circumstances arise.

Relations with peer reviewers

The Colombian Journal of Gastroenterology has made available a guide for peer reviewers that describes all the requirements and tasks they are expected to comply with. This guide is updated regularly. The identity of peer reviewers is concealed and protected at all times by the editorial team of the Journal in order to guarantee their anonymity.

Human rights

The Colombian Journal of Gastroenterology requires that all studies involving human beings strictly comply with the Ethical Principles for conducting medical research involving human beings established by World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki, last updated in 2013. In this sense, to be considered for publication, any work involving human beings submitted to the Journal must has been approved by a Research Ethics Committee of the institution or institutions where it was conducted and, when required, it must be clearly stated that informed consent was obtained from the people participating in the study. The Journal reserves the right to ask authors to provide a copy of the minutes or documents in which the study was granted ethical approval, or, in some cases, the informed consent forms signed by the individuals included in the study.

Registration of Prospective Clinical Trials

The Colombian Journal of Gastroenterology adheres to the policies of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the ICMJE on the registration of clinical trials. In order to be considered for publication in the Journal, any prospective study assessing interventions in humans must include the registration number of the research protocol in any of the Clinical Trials Registries accepted by the WHO and the ICMJE. It should be noted that the protocol registration must have been carried out prior to the recruitment of subjects. The registration site must be also stated.

Animal Experiments

In case of studies conducted in animals, they must follow the principles set forth in the International Guiding Principles for Biomedical Research Involving Animals by the Council for International Organization of Medical Sciences: CIOMS, an organization established jointly by the WHO and UNESCO. Also, if the research was conducted in Colombia, it must comply with the provisions of Resolution No. 008430 of October 4 1993, issued by the Colombian Ministry of Health, whereby scientific, technical and administrative standards in health research are established, in particular Section V, which explicitly refers to biomedical research in animals, and the provisions of Law 84 of 1989, whereby the National Animal Protection Statute is adopted. Authors must specify the guidelines or regulations that were followed to ensure the protection of animals used in the experimentation process.

Plagiarism is defined as presenting the work of another person or people as one's own work. This includes copying or reproducing it without acknowledging (citing) the source.

- Using texts downloaded from the Internet

- Using statistical data or facts collected by other person or source

- Copying or downloading figures, photographs, images, or diagrams without citing the respective sources

- Copying a colleague's or student's notes or essays

Authors should bear in mind that:

- Copying verbatim texts, tables or illustrations from any source (journal paper, book, monographs, thesis, the Internet / any electronic media or any other published or unpublished material) and including them in the paper as own content is considered plagiarism.

- Listing the source of the copied contents in the 'References List' does not absolve authors of plagiarism.

- If some lines of text from any source are to be reproduced in the paper, "the author" and "the source" must be clearly stated in the text where included. These lines must be in italics and in quotation marks. In case of a whole paragraph, it must also be slightly indented. CLARIFICATIONS AND CORRECTIONS POLICY

The Colombian Journal of Gastroenterology publishes corrections or retractions following the 2019 version of the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), available at https://publicationethics.org/guidance. Retraction is a mechanism that allows making corrections in the literature already published and warning readers about articles that have wrong contents or data that make their findings and conclusions unreliable. Unreliable content or data may be the result of honest errors, naive mistakes, or research misconduct.

Retractions may be used to warn readers about duplicate publication, plagiarism, peer review manipulation, unauthorized reuse of material or data, copyright infringement or other legal issues (e.g., defamation, privacy issues, illegality), unethical research, and/or failure to disclose an important competing interest that would have unduly influenced the interpretations or recommendations made.

The Editorial Committee shall consider retracting a paper if:

- There is clear evidence that findings are unreliable.

- It constitutes plagiarism

- Findings have been previously published elsewhere without properly acknowledging the original source or sources or informing the editor about it, and without having to republish the contents or proper justification explaining the situation (i.e., cases of redundant publication)

- The article includes contents or data without having been authorized to use them.

- Copyright has been infringed or there is some other serious legal issue (e.g., defamation, privacy issues)

- The article reports unethical research

- The paper has been published solely on the basis of a compromised or manipulated peer review process.

- Authors did not disclose a significant competing interest or conflict of interest that would have unduly affected the interpretations of the paper.

The Colombian Journal of Gastroenterology accepts comments and opinions dissenting from any contents published by it. It also accepts justified retractions made by authors, and shall promptly correct typographical or other errors that may have been made in the publication process of an article.
